Disgrace for the great philosophy

Christian churches come under attack in Sri Lanka

This is a low level, immoral act and I really can not understand why the Buddhist people in Sri Lanka tollerate such attacks over other religions no matter what the reasons behind are. Buddhism is a great philosophy where we learn to tolerate views of others. As a Buddhist, I should say that this kind of acts should not be tolerated and the people engage in this kind of acts to spread religious tension should be isolated. Also should investigate on hidden agendas of such attacks if any.

If people, monks, priests or whoever do not follow the principles of the respective religion, philosophy then the government should step in and bring the culprits forward. If they are monks, we have to have a system to strip the robes, if they found to be guilty of such crimes. It has to be done now than later.

We were living in this country for centuries without having any problems between our religions. Sadly, the society has turned violent and intolerable due to the acts of barbaric LTTE terrorists and the propaganda mechanism driven by various foreign NGO’s linked to the terrorists. Lately, many newly formed evangelist groups stepped in and started to convert Buddhists, Anglicans, Catholics to these newly formed so called religions or whatever they call themselves. As a matter of fact, they do have the freedom to do so within the legal framework of the country they operate. Unlike in China, it is not illegal to set up a branch of a new religion in Sri Lanka.

If we live in a society where we help/respect each other, then it is impossible for these groups to convince anyone to get converted to their religion.
If the temples and churches engage in helping the communities, I can not think how a new religion can come up and convince anyone to get converted. We are paying the price of our own negligence and at least now, we should all get together and address the key issues behind this. It is absurd if any monk or any person think to take arms, attack or burn the symbols of any other religion for the sake of protecting their own religion/philosophy.
That is exactly what some of those so called LTTE linked religious NGO’s wants us to do. So by committing these kind of shameful acts, we are encouraging them and giving them more support to build more sympathizers and to get those new religions established in our country.
Do not forget the LTTE terrorist network. They are waiting to create more conflicts between Sri Lankans and the West. For example, read the above news published by a pro-ltte tamil website and the extent they highlight the religious tension in Sri Lanka.

Shame on those who did this crime and also for allowing this kind of insanity to take place in a country that was known for its culture and values.

Remember what happen when a cool looking guy name Jesus express politically incorrect feeling about religion those days. Some may not – but I do. The lesson of that is – if you been politically incorrect about the religion - then expect the worst. But some one has to tell the truth. It has to be said. I know I’m not politically correct – but let me say this – Religion is neurological disorder. (Yes I copy that form Bill Masher – so what – are you going to crucify me?) Let me say it again (it make me happy) RELIGON IS NEUROLIGICAL DISORDER.

In the human history humans have killed each other for religion more than anything else. Remember medieval age? Remember Crusade? Remember millions of woman burning live? Remember plans flying in to building? All of those are faith base initiatives. Religion is neurological Disorder.

Israel gathers around ‘Promise Land’. Briton gathers around ‘Her Majesty’. America gathers around ‘Declaration of independency’. India gather around ‘India!’. What we gather around? Religion! Religion is neurological Disorder. This explain lot of things why Sri Lankans behave the way they do.

When countries come to end of the 20th century – they all win it is freedom – Freedom form religion - Religion that used to control humans for 1000s of years - The religion that control education – human feeding habits –human interaction – most of all, human underwear. But even after 20th century Sri Lanka could not step out of this religion mess.

Our constitution says Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country and Buddhism is the national religion. Aren’t we 500 years behind? Isn’t it time to take the dam religion out the state? How about if we say ‘All Men and woman are born equal and free in Sri Lanka instead of their religion and sexual preference’ – isn’t that real Buddhist? If Buddhists need higher favor from the state, then how about Buddhists paying higher tax to the state?
Sri Lanka never been Buddhist and most of the Sri Lankans are not Buddhists even now. We ask ‘what religion are you?’ from 2nd grade student and start to teach only that religion in the public school. Second grade student only know about chocolate. They know nothing about God or Karma or 72 virgins in heaven. How about if we teach all the religions in the public school and let them practice what ever they want when they grow up – isn’t that real Buddhist?
I was unfortunate to see how we press the rewind button in Sri Lanka – and join religion and state together.
I can’t see ever Sinhalese give up religion as the collective reason. Because we do not have anything else to be united around. We like it or not most of the Sri Lankans will gather around that reason. Since the nature of the object we gather around is violent and prejudiced – we experience all this religion hatred – we will experience that more and more in the future since government and the religion having regular intercourse this age.

Sri Lankans do not consider ‘United Sri Lanka’ as their primary common reason to be united. If LTTE or any thing else, threaten ‘Country Sri Lanka’, we do not care. F*ck ‘Sri Lanka’. Let’s fight over Religion – let’s fight over tradition. Let’s kill some people who do not believe same thing we believe. Or let’s burn their buildings or something. Let’s act exactly as how white dudes acted before! After that if we have some time left, then fight over political parties. After that if we still have time left, then.. May be.. May be .. We can think about LTTE as a public enemy.

But Unfortunately Sri Lankan never had luxury of giving birth to Great humans like Gandhi – if she did - Religion and State will be two separate thing and ‘Da Vinci Code’ never been ban in Sri Lanka.

If God don’t like I’m watching ‘Da Vinci Code’ let him tell me that. Not You. If it is bad Karma for me not to have any faith base initiative to destroy others beliefs, let Karma punish me. Not You.

Let’s not be shamed. Let’s be happy. Let’s be happy about ‘we – Sri Lankan Buddhists’ learn how to be religions form Western countries and act exactly the same way they did. We start “Buddhist” schools and start brainwash kids with religion crap same - just like Westerns did (even that is not Buddhism).
We start to send cards at religious days – Just like westerns did (even that is not Buddhism).
We start to get kids to sing door to door in poring rain in religious days – Just like westerns did (even that is not Buddhism).
We say pre-marriage sex is bad – Just like westerns did (even that is not Buddhism).
We say single parenting is bad – Just like westerns did (even that is not Buddhism).
We say same sex marriage is bad – Just like westerns did (even that is not Buddhism).
Now we burn down some other religion places – Just like westerns did (even that is not Buddhism). Lets be happy. Now we are officially religious nation up to western standards.
Cheers! We religious! it is not our fault RELIGON IS A NEUROLIGICAL DISORDER.

Janapathi, I agree with you that violence against any religious group should not be condoned and that there should be stern action taken from the sasana to disrobe offending monks. You do however attribute not only the violence of Sri Lankan society but also its intolerence purely to the LTTE. Let us not forget how the ethnic conflict began - it was due to the intolerence of the majority community, the Singhalese Buddhists. As Newton said "for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction." This is how the Tamil struggle came about. Don't get me wrong. In no way am I suggesting that the atrocities of the LTTE are justified. They remain barbaric, cold-blooded killers of the highest degree.

Sam, you make some very interesting comments. I am inclined to agree with you that the Sri Lankan State is inherently married to religion. It continues to be reactionary to the highest degree: no religious/linguistic parity, by way of the Constitution. No one can rightfully claim that there is, once having understood these clauses.

It was Dharmapala who planted the seeds in the late nineteenth century. Navalar's was "an equal but opposite reaction." It was Bandaranaike who married language and race and the Constitution of 1972 that married religion into the State. Thus the Sri Lankan State remains a reactionary force, with a claim to a leftist power elite. There is little freedom of expression as evidenced in the latest trend in banning of movies. As we inch further away into the 21st century, the reactionaries at the helm are dragging us back to the previous century. Either they were asleep at the dawn of the millenium and stayed so for the last six years or else, there is an evident lack of education at the highest level of decision making.... or I wonder: could it be both?

Attributing all problems of sri lanka to LTTE is unfortunately wrong. Janapathi you should kindly remind yourself of the barbaric and terrorist activities of the sri lankan armed forces. Their atrocities is what has created the LTTE. It is people like you who have a narrow minded, short sighted attitude to other groups that has created groups such as the LTTE. First look at the person in the mirror and change your racist attitudes this will go a long way in solving some of sri lanka's problems
