Sri Lankan Students Network
First hand information always matters. I have come across many parents sending kids to study in foreign universities by listening to various local and foreign agents and later facing various problems. Some of the common problems are;
1. The university is not recognized like the way that the agent or the university web site described it.
2. The university is not a university but a college.
3. The degree/university ask the student to have a certain minimum standard and the student having to spend years on studying and preparing for an entrance examination.
4. Showing a rosy picture about, how other students earn and study in some countries without explaining the legality of it.
5. Promising to find part time jobs for students and ending up with nothing.
6. Charging off-hand unreasonable amounts as university fees and later discovering that the direct admission would have cost them half of it.
7. Other scams and extra charges related to the visa process. (When it comes to student visas, the process is straightforward)
8. Parents going for mortgages, loans etc to find the money for full year university fees and later discovering the availability of the option of semester based, subject based payments.
9. In many cases, university apartments costing more than private apartments.
Above are some of the issues I have read and heard over the years. This site is a great place to help each other.
